Red Herring Studio

Worn & Lost soles, recent studio piece

New press release for the studio going out soon to the local newspaper Argus. Since I have joined it has been really great to meet so many dedicated artists and be a part of a genuine artists co-operative. If you would like to be a part of this please get in touch as we have a few spaces left to fill in this great building.

"Red Herring Studios finds new home in Portslade

Red Herring Studios, Brighton & Hove’s long-established cooperative art studio, has found a new home in Portslade. The artist group was in the news last year when its previous site in School Road, Hove, was cleared for redevelopment.

The studios are open for business and are looking for more artists to take up spaces in the building.

Nick Sayers, one of the artists, said: “it’s such a relief that we’ve gone from seeking a new home to advertising for new artists to join us. And it’s exciting to have moved to this area – it’s quite industrial, but full of some fantastically creative companies: Blast Theory, Millimetre, Studio Morison, Plunge… and Small Batch Coffee HQ is our next-door neighbour, so what’s not to like?”.

The cooperative began life in 1985, and has moved a few times in its 33 years, including a floor at Phoenix Brighton in the 1990s. Perhaps part of the zeitgeist, Phoenix intends to open a second studio complex in north Portslade in the next few years - part of a gradual exodus of creative industries from the centre of Brighton, which has become too expensive for many smaller businesses.

Red Herring aims to continue its ethos of offering affordable studio space to a wide variety of art practices.

Artists who are interested in renting spaces at Red Herring should visit the website, redherringstudios.org, to arrange a viewing."
