Sculpture in the Expanded Field
I've been reviewing and planning my PowerPoint for tomorrow mornings PGCE lecture and I was struck again but the simple but insightful writing of Rosalind Krause and particularly her piece 'Sculpture in the Expanded Field'. I am keen to explore with the students tomorrow issues around definition and the standing of sculpture in the curriculum. Her words are simple and key in my understanding:
Sculpture could be more than a carved or modelled object: –
it could be constructed
it could consist of many parts
it could represent an idea
it could be made from found objects
it could be a performance, an action event
it could use words, sounds, smells
it could use rooms, buildings, landscape
it could be the artist’s own body
it could be people
it could be you!
THIS IS SCULPTURE!
